In the late 1960’s Elliot Berman of Exxon lead a project to look for an alternative to energy sources going forward approximately 30 years. In 1977, ARCO Solar built a factory in Camarillo, California which was the first dedicated to building only solar panels. Numerous events took place to lower the price of wattage. In 2011, ARCO Solar closed its doors due to strong competition in panel production. The huge popularity of wide screen TVs led to the production of the large pieces of glass needed for solar panels. China could produce this more cheaply as well as silicon panels. Silicon panels then became the state of the art in the production of solar panels. Add to this, the decrease of demand in Europe for solar panels and due to their sliding economy, the market dipped. China could produce the panels cheaper than any place in the world and the widely used crystalline solar-based modules which now produce wattage priced at $1.09 per watt.
