A solar updraft tower combines the way a chimney works with updrafts, the way that greenhouse effects work and the way that wind turbines work to create energy. The structure is often over 2400 feet tall with sun driven energy as the basis for its mechanics. Air is heated by the sunlight and contained in a greenhouse at the base of the tall chimney. The result is convection that causes air to rise up the tower. This drives the turbines which produce the power to make electricity.

There are two factors determining how much energy can be produced by the solar chimneys. One is the collector area where the greenhouse heats the air. The second is the height of the chimney. Heat can be stored. Heated water can be filled in tubes to be used as needed and turbines can be used to move the heated air to help create the energy that is converted into electricity.

Sungate Energy Solutions is looking at this as an option for the future.  Low value and hot climates like those found if the deserts would likely be the best suited location of these structures. Remote regions of developing countries could also benefit from this type of energy production.
